DJ Vocal Jazz

The Durham Vocal Jazz is available to all students between grades 8-12.  Decisions will be based on willingness to learn and skill.  Applicants should have some prior singing experience (school/community choirs, private lessons, etc.)

Audition Details:

  1. Requirements:
        1. Learn the appropriate part** of “Unforgettable” by Irving Gordon
        2. Applicants are asked to bring an additional piece of your choice that showcases your singing.
        3. Accompanists will not be provided. You may bring your own accompanist for your personally selected piece if you wish. If you prefer to perform with a backing track, your pre-recorded accompaniment must be instrumental ONLY (no other voices on the recording).
        4. Applicants will be asked to sing a major scale and chromatic scale within their range. A triad to establish the key and the starting pitch will be given.
        5. Applicants will be required to sing back a short section of melody.

    ** When deciding what part to sing, you will need to choose the part where you can comfortably reach the following notes:
    Soprano: C4-C6
    Mezzo Soprano: A3-A5
    Alto: F3-F5
    Tenor: C3-C5
    Baritone: A2-A4
    Bass: E2-E4

  2. What to Expect:
      1. Applicants please expect to:
        1. See other applicants warming up at the same time
        2. Meet past members of the ensembles. Feel free to ask questions.
        3. See 3-5 people on the audition panel
        4. Find that your audition will be recorded (audio only) for comparison purposes
        5. Be in the audition for 10 minutes. During part of your audition you will be asked questions about yourself.
        6. Pianists: Durham Jazz would like to invite pianists to audition for the role of accompanying the Durham Jazz Vocal Jazz Ensemble!! Pianists should be comfortable with reading both chord symbols and written notation.  Previous experience accompanying singers is an asset but not required.  If you are interested your audition will consist of three parts:
          1. Play the selected vocal jazz audition piece “Unforgettable” by Irving Gordon, paying specific attention to the voicing indicated.
          2. Play an additional piece of your choice that showcases your abilities as a pianist.
          3. Sight-read a short excerpt from a vocal jazz chart that will be provided at the audition.
      2. Families please expect to:
        1. Meet members of our Parent Council. Please feel free to ask questions.
        2. Receive information about the band
      3. Results:  The results from the 2017-2018 auditions will be posted on the “Members & Alumni” page on the website by the Monday after auditions.  As there may be 100+ applicants, it will be the responsibility of each family to check the website for results. A bulk email will also be sent, advising you of the results.
      4. If successful: Please be aware that, if your audition is successful, there will be a family and member meeting on Tuesday, October 3rd, 2017 in the evening that at least one adult member of your family must attend along with the applicant.  Practices will start the Thursday after auditions. (October 5th, 2017)

      9. ***Please give a minimum of two time slot ranges you can commit to being available for during the week of auditions.
